This open question and answer session on all things related to handpans was recorded live with an online audience on Friday, April 10, 2020. We played a number of Aura handpans and RAV drums in different scales, explored handpan music theory and technique, and answered many audience questions.
About the Mallet Harp: A fun, easy to play instrument for all ages, the mallet harp brings the joy of music to beginners and experienced musicians alike. With numerous applications, the mallet harp is ideal for music therapy, stress relief, sound healing, childhood development, emotional health and overall wellness. The A minor pentatonic scale creates beautiful melodies and harmonies, no matter what sequence the notes are played in. This makes it so that the player does not need to know music theory or even what notes they are playing at any given moment to make great sounds.
Welcome to your first lesson on how to play the shruti box with Ixchel Prisma. In this video you will learn some basic techniques to make a steady sound on the instrument, how to start the instrument most effectively, how to tune to different keys PLUS a few different vocalizations that work well with the shruti box.
Ixchel was also nice enough to do a comparison on the 3 most common sizes of shruti boxes available:

The company behind our favorite lightweight compact didgeridoo, Airdidge, has released a new accessory that makes the instrument extremely versatile. The Slide & Tune Adaptor for Airdidge allows the player to fine tune the key of the instrument, allowing for playing in all 12 keys, tuning in 432hz tuning, and even more options.
In this video Jerry Walsh demonstrates 7 keys (A through E) that this slide adaptor allows your Airdidge to play in. Since making the video, we confirmed that all 12 keys are attainable with this adaptor. Also shown in the video is the 30mm (1.18 inches) red mouthpiece insert, which makes the diameter of the mouthpiece slightly smaller. This insert is also available in a 28mm (1.1 inches) white version.
All About Airdidge
Airdidge: Carbon Fiber Telescoping Didgeridoo for Travel
Airdidge is the first carbon fiber telescoping didgeridoo designed for the traveling musician. With a weight of 1.2 lbs and a packed length of 14.57 inches, this instrument is the ideal companion for traveling. Fully extended, the Airdidge measures 73 inches and plays in the key of Bb. When the largest piece is removed, this didgeridoo plays in the key of C. Remove the second largest piece and it plays in the key of Eb.
Airdidge is made up of 6 conical pieces and a mouthpiece. These conical pieces are designed to be inserted into each other with the taper going in the same direction. If accidentally inserted improperly, with one or more pieces in the wrong direction, there is a risk that the pieces may get stuck. If you force these pieces in, they will almost certainly get stuck and will be difficult to remove. The pieces should slide in effortlessly. See diagram at the top of this page for proper assembly.
Airdidge is exclusively distributed by Didge Project in the United States.

As a novice to the didgeridoo the airdidge at full extension was extremely hard to get a drone. However, by removing the bottom two sections a simple drone is easy to get so I added a section and practiced then added the last section and got the grasp of it pretty quickly. It doesn’t take a lot of air to play and requires a very relaxed lip buzz for the initial drone. The Airdidge is an exceptional instrument with outstanding build quality. The carbon fiber is beautiful to look at and the telescoping design is perfect for travel. The sound is absolutely amazing in all three keys. Shipping included tracking and was delivered fast. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in a travel didge.

I’ve been searching for a compact, easy to pack Didge for camping and saw great reviews of Airdidge. So far I’m extremely impressed with this instrument. I’ll be spending lots of time with my new Airdidge this weekend in the woods.

Great product… The mouthpiece seemed an outrageously expensive… $30 for a piece of plastic?

The AirDidge is revolutionary. Huge sound, long when extended, deep bass, good resonance, and the extension adds a whole new dimension. Easy to play. First didge I’ve been able to circular breathe on and keep the drone going on. It’s light, so I can sit back and kick it up on my leg and play. Packable, is a plus as I like to go out in the woods. Not necessary but the padded bag is good quality and you will feel safer having it in there if you want to throw a little more money at it. It’s really a system when you put everything together. Anyway, I love it and it has helped me progress so much in a short time. Thanks Didge Project.

10 out of 10 for what it is. It’s a game changer if you travel a lot. I used to travel with box didgeridoo but there’s no comparison. I love it!

Great instrument, I took it on a 400 mile bike-packing journey and it provided me with sound and vibrations whenever I needed it. Do not let it get dirt or sand on it, it’ll scratch the carbon fiber when you open and close it. Just bring a piece of cloth or bandana that you can put in the case, so when you take it into nature you can rest it on the fabric while you play.

Adrian DiMatteo and AJ Block here. Today we are excited to show you how to play handpan & guitar together. This is a great combination which we use all the time. Each handpan has a certain number of notes that lets you play different chords, so you can do some chord changes; also by just playing the scale you can get a lot of different colors and textures combined with the guitar which has infinite harmonic possibilities, and get a lot of good combinations and a lot of unique different sounds. We’re going to talk a little bit about music theory, a little bit about guitar technique and handpan technique and how we can think about the instrument and apply those ideas to finding different textures, different melodies and chord changes that we can use so that the instruments sound harmonious together. Since both handpan & guitar create chords, we’re gonna be careful not to step on each other’s toes
The handpan used in this video is actually a RAV Drum in the A Integral scale, which works great with guitar because you can play a lot of open chords, including A minor, C major, G major, E minor, F major, and more. All of these are “open” chords on the guitar and are really simple to play.
The notes on the A Integral RAV Drum are A B C E F G, so it’s basically the A natural minor scale without the note D. It’s a 6-note scale and some of the notes
repeat themselves.
This video is filled with mallet percussion exercises on one of the most beautiful sounding, portable mallet percussion instruments: the mallet harp! It’s in the A Minor Pentatonic scale, so you really don’t need to know anything about music theory to make it sound great. There are no wrong notes!
