Breathing Exercises For Wind Instrument Players

In this video you will learn some of the best breathing exercises for wind instrument players. The biggest key is I have found is engaging the abdominal muscles and the diaphragm. Some call this diaphragmatic breathing, and others refer to it as the “forced exhale” due to the pushing sensation with the abdominal muscles. By doing this, you will have more strength behind your breath, which leads to a better tone and overall improved wind instrument playing. This video comes from the Didge For Sleep DVD.

Here’s an illustration of diaphragmatic breathing:

Pan Drum Comparison: RAV Vast vs. Tacta Handpan vs. GUDA Neo vs. GUDA Mini Overtone

In this pan drum comparision we show the similarities and differences between 4 different metal pan drums: the RAV Vast (B Integral scale), Tacta Handpan (A Avalon 9 scale), GUDA Neo (Bb Major), and GUDA Mini Overtone (C Minor). Each one has a totally unique sound yet they all share some common qualities. Some of these drums sustain longer than others and some have a richer overtone profile. Weight, size and aesthetics are also major differences. Watch the video above and hear the difference!

The pan drum, aka handpan or “hang,” is a convex steel drum played with the hands and tuned with multiple notes. Each handpan is tuned to a particular scale such as major, natural minor, harmonic minor, hijaz, mixolydian, etc. Sonically the handpan is an overtone-emitting instrument that has the capacity to create many layers of sound and ethereal effects and works very well with drone instruments. Originally called the hang (pronounced “hah-ng”) the handpan was invented in 2001 by a little company in Switzerland called PANArt.

Tacta Handpan

tacta-handpan-buy-order-purchase-hang Tacta handpans are professional quality instruments made by Brazilian craftsman Rafael D’Arco. The sensitivity to the touch and amazing overtones make Tacta handpans some of the best handpans around.

Purchase a Tacta Handpan here

This instrument is made from stainless steel, as opposed to nitrided steel that other makers use, which results in a longer sustain (the notes ring out for a longer period of time). All Tacta Handpans come in the gold/brass color seen here in the photos. Available in 14 scales!

GUDA Neo

GUDA drums are remarkable for having a big sound in a body smaller than standard sized pan drums. They are tongue drums, like RAV (as opposed to continuous steel pans like Tacta). Since the tongues do not resonate for as long as the RAV Drum, the resulting sound is quite different and lends itself to a more percussive, staccato style of playing.

Made by Zen Percussion, GUDA Neo features beautiful engraved designs and usually comes with a wonderful backpack carrying case.

GUDA Mini Overtone

The GUDA Mini Overtone is perhaps the most compact pan drum that we recommend. Not only that, but the engraved designs are stunning. Like the GUDA Neo, the GUDA Mini Overtone Check out Jerry Walsh demoing the GUDA Mini Overtone drum in the video above.

Final Thoughts

You really can’t go wrong with any of these pan drums, but knowing what you need will really help. If you travel a lot and want something compact and lightweight, a GUDA might be the drum for you. If you want the full expression of that iconic handpan sound, a Tacta handpan, might be the one for you. If you want a balance of sound and price, RAV is probably the best choice for you. Having a pan drum will most certainly enrich your life, open new doors for you and expand your musical potential.

Journey To The Heart of Mayan Wisdom – A 10 Day Pilgrimage to Guatemala

0

with AJ Block, Xango Shola and special guests Tata Pedro Cruz and Nana Marina Cruz of the Tz’utujil Mayan Family of San Pedro de Atitlán

GUATEMALA

April 24 – May 3, 2018

img_4911editttt2.jpg

You are invited to enter the Heart of Mayan Wisdom, a journey into ancient shamanic practices.

On this pilgrimage we will reach places where indigenous communities practice ancient ceremonies and prayers, upholding traditions which have gone uninterrupted for thousands of years.

Our journey into knowledge is focused on inner-development and self-improvement through tangible tools passed from Mayan elders. Many of these ways have been hidden away, protected from misuse by outsiders. Now with the emergence of the Age of Aquarius, profound knowledge from the Mayan people is being unveiled. The Mayan tradition is founded on the manifestation of spirit in the natural world. Plants, animals, minerals, the four elements, the cosmos, and everything found in the natural world plays an important role in Mayan ceremonies and daily life.

The sites of our pilgrimage are a direct manifestation of this spirit-nature worldview. Our trip will be centered at the Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, a spiritual hub for Mayan wisdom. Many of our activities will happen here and we will also travel to sacred sites throughout the region where we will participate in ceremonies.

Together with the Mayan elders we will participate in a number of traditional Mayan ceremonies and practices, including:

Mayan Fire Ceremony

To the Mayan People, the sacred fire is a living manifestation of spirit and responds to our offerings and prayers. We will participate in these ceremonies at ancient sites throughout the region.

Cacao Ceremony

The sacred cacao plant has been used as a sacrament by the Mayan people since ancient times, and in ceremony it carries the power to cleanse and purify. In addition to participating in cacao ceremonies, we will learn about the traditional uses of cacao and how to prepare it for ceremonial use.

Temazcal (Sweat Lodge)

In many native traditions throughout the Americas, every home has a temazcal, a earthen chamber used for sweat lodge ceremonies. The sweat lodge is used for physical, emotional, mental and spiritual healing. The Mayan people have a unique approach to the sweat lodge ceremony and we will participate in and learn the wisdom of this practice.

Mayan Yoga and Meditation

Over many thousands of years the Mayan people have developed an equivalent to the yoga of India. Through postures, exercises and meditations, these practices aim to connect us to the spirit realm and help us to find long lasting health and happiness.

Additionally, we will be immersed into traditional healing arts such as the Mayan massage, Mayan plant medicines to address all healing conditions, tobacco healing, tobacco divination and more. Vegetarian food will be provided for all meals and a translator will facilitate the transmission of information from Spanish to English.

OUR MAYAN ELDERS & GUIDES

tata.jpg

Tata Pedro Cruz

One of the few surviving members of the Mayan Council of the Elders of Tz’utujil, which is a branch of the Maya Qui-che. “Tata Pedro” as he is most affectionately known, is a traditional Mayan Ajq’ij and Day Keeper, and one of the principal authorities of the Council of Mayan Elders of Lake Atitlan in Guatamala. He received the title, “Heart of the Lake Atitlan” K’U’XYA, by his fellow Mayan Council of Elders and Tz’utujil people. Tata Pedro recognizes the interconnectedness of all people, the expanding consciousness of the planet, and the urgent need to unify our spiritual, cultural and ethnic wisdom for the benefit of the planet and humanity. Tata Pedro is a globally recognized elder in the Mayan tradition and has traveled far and wide sharing knowledge, ceremonies and practices.  He is the interpreter of dreams for his community and a leader of the preservation and education of Mayan day keeping  and fire ceremonies.

Nana Marina Cruz

Nana Marina is the daughter of Tata Pedro and is a healer, day keeper, herbalist, and conductor of the Cacao, Temazcal and Fire Ceremonies. In addition she is highly knowledgable in the use of tobacco for healing and divination and has trained many younger healers from her community.

TRIP ORGANIZERS

Travel Didgeridoo Comparison: Airdidge vs. Wooden Spiral Didge vs. 4-Piece Plastic Didgeridoo

0

In this comparison of some of the best travel didgeridoos on the market we compare the carbon fiber telescoping Airdidge, the Indonesian Wooden Spiral Didgeridoo and the 4-Piece Plastic Travel Didgeridoo. Each one of these instruments has a unique set of features and lists a bunch of different reasons why you might want to get one.

Airdidge

Airdidge

The Airdidge is one of the hottest new didgeridoos on the market, coming in at 1.2 lbs and under 15″ when packed, it instantly extends to over 5 feet in length and plays and sounds amazing!

Check out in the video how easy it is to flick the Airdidge out like a lightsabre. It makes for a super cool stage trick, but also a very practical way to go from taking up very little space, to instantly being able to play a full length, full toned didgeridoo. At $395, the Airdidge is the most expensive of the travel didgeridoos presented here, and its also the most modern and slick.

Purchase Airdidge

Wooden Spiral Didgeridoo

This Indonesian make instrument is painted in a faux-aboriginal dot art style and looks really intriguing. The sound hole is in the center of the spiral and it is easy to grip this instrument from many different angles. The volume that the player gets from this didge is not nearly as loud as either of the other two in this review. However, the instrument still allows form the player to get a great tone quality and its another very compact option for travelers.  At $175, the Wooden Spiral Didgeridoo is a great option for travelers who want something easy to practice on that wont take up a lot of physical or sonic space.

Purchase Wooden Spiral Didgeridoo

4-Piece Plastic Travel Didgeridoo

This screw-together didgeridoo is the most versatile of the bunch because it allows you to play in at least 4 different keys (plus there may be other combinations we haven’t even figured out yet). This one comes with a carrying case and has a removable silicone mouthpiece that makes it easy to play. While it may take a minute or two to screw together, this one plays so easily (especially at its full length) that its worth the extra effort. Additionally, this one is the cheapest of the bunch, making it an excellent choice for beginners.

Purchase 4-Piece Travel Didgeridoo

Purchase Didge For Sleep Intro Package (includes Travel Didgeridoo, DVD and Handbook)

Which Travel Didgeridoo is Best?

To conclude this travel didgeridoo comparison, you might expect us to rule one of these instruments as the “best” travel didgeridoo. If price is your main factor, you probably want to go with the Wooden Spiral Didge or the 4-Piece Plastic Travel Didgeridoo. If you want to have something super lightweight and compact, then Airdidge is your best bet. It really comes down to what you need and which of these tools will help you most effectively meet your goals.

RAV Vast Relases 4 New Models In The Key of B: B Kurd, B Major, B Minor Pentatonic and B Integral

The RAV Drum company recently released 4 new scales in the key of B, plus we had our first ever B RUS in the shop. In this video we review these 5 RAV Drum models: B Major, B Minor Pentatonic, B Kurd (with double ding), B Integral and B RUS. All of these models (except for the B Major) are in minor keys, meaning they evoke a more mysterious, mystical mood, which we find great for meditative playing. The bright sound of the B Major creates a sunny joyful atmosphere.

*Purchase RAV Vast here: https://www.didgeproject.com/store

One thing to consider when buying a RAV Drum is, what are you going to use it for? If you are collaborating with other musicians, its good to know what keys they like to play in. If you are using this for meditation and more personally, you may want to go with a model that you sonically resonate with most. If you are using this to facilitate meditation or sound healing for others, you may want to choose a brighter sounding model that brings listeners into a place of peace. What is the vibe that you want to go for? At the end of the day you will be happy with whichever RAV Drum that you get.

About RAV Drums:
RAV Drum (aka RAV Vast) is a relatively new instrument that fuses the concepts behind handpans (hang drums) and tongue drums (traditionally made of wood). Perfectly cut steel tongues vibrate harmoniously together to create an ethereal sound perfect for meditation, relaxation, and other mystical music experiences. RAV was invented in 2013, the same year PanArt stopped making the Hang. RAV is from Russia with cut keys as opposed to the hammer tuned Hang drum, which is not cut or welded in anyway. The RAV has a deep resonance and profound reverb effect where the sound lasts for a long time while the Hang drum sound goes for a much shorter duration. This allows for a lot more space between key strokes in the RAV because the sound carries so long without losing the rhythm, which can make for more experimental playing in some respects than the Hang or handpan. The fullness of the sound and the duration of each key stroke makes the instrument very meditative to play because it renders itself to slow playing but of course can also be played very quickly and rhythmically. The backside is not as accessible or resonant as a handpan but can still be played rhythmically. The price of a RAV is 1/3 the cost of a Hang and is also generally easier to play than the Hang for most people. It is also a much more durable and sturdy instrument. The handpan can be knocked out of tune with too hard of a hit and over time may need to get tuned up regardless while the Rav does not and is almost impossible to knock out of tune. The Rav also has harmonics beyond the fundamental key like the Hang/handpan and both are available through Didge Project for purchase at https://www.didgeproject.com/store.

10 Of The Best Musical Instruments For Children To Learn

3
child-guitar-playing

Who didn’t want to be a rock star when they were growing up? It’s pretty common knowledge that all-around learning, brain development and improved social skills have been linked to playing a musical instrument. So whether you hope that your child will be the next Mozart or you just want them to have an outlet for their creativity, check out this list of potential instruments that they can play and love.

1Piano/Keyboard

Many of us adults remember our parents forcing us to take piano lessons and perform recitals, which more than likely led us to take our interests elsewhere. In reality, it’s all about the right attitude and encouragement. What’s hard for children to see is that learning the piano or keyboard is so special because it forms the basis of so much music. It is one of the few instruments in which all elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm and dynamics) can be expressed at all levels of complexity.  Not only that, it is a very clear instrument to learn (you can start by just pressing one key) and its a great stepping stone for kids to then move over to other instruments.

2Guitar

Next to piano, the guitar is the most popular instrument for children to learn. Many look up to their favorite popular musicians and want to emulate them. Like the piano, the guitar is another great foundational instrument and has the added benefit of being able to learn familiar songs easily. The guitar will not only teach them the basics of music, but also help them develop manual dexterity that can be applied to other instruments and other aspects of life.

3Bass Guitar

The bass is an often under-appreciated instrument, but in many bands it plays a cornerstone role. We often think of the bassist in the background, holding down the groove. When we go to a concert or listen to music on nice speakers or headphones, it is the bass that gives a song depth. The bass is tuned similarly to guitars but instead of six strings, your child is just working with just four which makes the instrument much more manageable. The fingers need to be a bit developed to play bass, so starting on a smaller string instrument such as guitar, ukulele, cello or violin may be a good starting point for a future bass player. Professional musicians say that a good bass player will never be without work because it is such an in-demand instrument for live acts.

4Ukulele

What’s nice about the ukulele is its small size. Beginner ukuleles are just the perfect size for kids and it can be pretty easy to learn a few chords and play some familiar songs in a short amount of time. And let’s be fair: unlike some of our other recommendations, the ukulele is a fairly quiet instrument, which is nice if you have to listen to your child practice for hours on end!

5The Drums

Parents often want their kids to be quieter, not louder. But the drums are so much fun and can be a great outlet for kids dealing with aggression and teenage angst! Drum studies teach kids rhythm which is an essential element in all music. With the drums, everything is built around rhythm and drum students don’t necessarily need to learn harmony or certain aspects of music theory which can be quite mental and a big turn off for a lot of music students. Great news for today’s parents: there are now a number of electronic drum kits on the market which result in much quieter spaces while your child plays and listens on headphones (link). This gives them all the benefits of the drums, and they can just practice with headphones on turning one of the loudest instruments into one of the quietest!

6Recorder, Flute and/or Clarinet

Technically speaking, one of the easiest woodwinds to pick up is the recorder. Many schools will have group recorder classes and a simple fingering chart may be enough for a parent to teach a child. Most teachers use the recorder as an introductory instrument to either the flute or clarinet, both of which use a similar fingering system. The recorder is very portable and it teaches the important beginning techniques of woodwinds—the breathing and finger positioning. Once a child spends some time with the recorder they will be ready to tackle the more difficult mouthpieces of the flute or clarinet, or other woodwind instruments.

7Saxophone

The saxophone is another woodwind instrument that is popular among music students. Its versatility is what makes it a great instrument option, finding a place in a wide variety of genres including R&B, Rock, Blues and Jazz! There are a number of different size saxophones including soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, and it makes a great crossover with clarinet and flute.

8Cajon Drum and other hand drums

The cajon is a Peruvian percussion instrument that has been slowly entering many genres of music. It provides a wide variety of sounds and can be played with bare hands, sticks or brushes, making it very fun experiment with. It’s sound resembles that of a full drum kit as it has a low bass sound (when hitting the center of the face) or a higher snare sound (when hitting the edge of the face). Best of all, it is relatively lightweight and compact, so its easy to move around and store when not in use.

9Violin

The violin definitely has a steeper learning curve than some of the other instruments on this list. This is because playing violin requires manual dexterity and a good ear for intonation being developed simultaneously. If your child can push through the initial stage with the violin, then they will be will on their way to understanding the complex beauty of this instrument.

10Didgeridoo

One of the easiest wind instruments to learn, the didgeridoo is a great instrument for kids and adults alike. With no moving parts, slides or keys, the didgeridoo is an instrument that requires techniques that utilize the tongue, cheeks, abs, throat and voice muscles, among others. Many children didgeridoo players find the instrument fun to play and love to learn how to imitate different animal sounds with the instrument. Learning the instrument is great for coordinating the breath with rhythm and timing. Check out Didge Project’s free didgeridoo lessons online.

So Many Musical Instruments For Children To Learn!

There is such a wide variety of musical instruments out there and this article has only begun to scratch the surface. Whether you and your child decide on a percussion, wind or string instrument, we encourage you as a parent to let the child explore  wherever their heart takes them. Give your child the opportunity to dive into their creative side so that they can let their inner artist shine.
